Black bear, wood ducks and deer are frequently seen in the shrub thickets surrounding Muddy Creek. In very dry years they may represent the only shallow water for miles and their presence is critical to the survival of wetland-dependent species like Wood Ducks Aix sponsaRiver Otters Lutra canadensis and Cottonmouth Snakes Agkistrodon piscivorus. Their efforts are establishing a future for the preserve, its habitat and wildlife. Avoiding notice is a task at which this owl often succeeds; it is overlooked in many places where it occurs. And that kind of swamp talk makes us think of a Louisiana Bayou, and alligators and such. Many upland creatures depend on the abundance of food found in the lowland swamps, and valuable timber can be sustainably harvested to provide building materials for people.
